The Second Victim Syndrome can occur when a health care professional makes a medical error and become traumatized by the event – manifesting psychological (such as shame, guilt, anxiety, grief, and depression), cognitive (such as burnout, secondary traumatic stress), and physical reactions that have a personal negative impact.
